A recent study by Evans et al reviewed the results of an open access pathway that offered priority appointments to patients with a history of positional vertigo.

Key points include:

  • Allowing open access for follow-up improved diagnostic rates by nearly 40%, helping to confirm cases that were previously unverified.

  • BPPV recurrence was observed in 34% of patients after one year, 41% after one to two years, and 53% after more than two years!

  • One in five recurrences affected a different semi-circular canal, highlighting the need for a comprehensive reassessment with each episode.

These findings make a strong case for trained vestibular therapist/specialist follow-up in managing recurrent BPPV, ensuring patients receive timely, accurate care.
